What should i know about LASIK
LASIK is one of the most popular and safe laser surgeries to correct vision problems and is considered an effective alternative to glasses or contact lenses which cause hassle to the patients.
In eyes with normal vision, the light within the cornea is bent (refracted) precisely onto the retina at the back of the eye. But with nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, the light is bent incorrectly resulting in blurred vision. Glasses or contact lenses can correct vision, but reshaping the cornea itself with the LASIK procedure will provide the necessary refraction of light, improving vision.
Are there different types of LASIK surgery?
LASIK procedures are not limited to one type, and according to each patient’s condition and the visual defects he suffers, the appropriate type of LASIK operation is determined for him. LASIK procedures (correction of vision defects) are divided into the following:
Femto Smile process
This type is characterized by being the latest and most advanced type of LASIK; It is used in the treatment of all vision problems, even for those who suffer from a thin stratum corneum. The femto-smile procedure is performed in just one step without the need to lift or remove any part of the corneal tissue.
Femto LASIK surgery
Another type of LASIK operation that is most common and used today; Being safe and fast. Any sharp or precise instruments are replaced with a laser to remove the thin layer of the cornea and then reshape the surface of the cornea. After completion, the doctor will return the thin layer over the surface of the cornea without any need to place a lens as a corneal dressing.
The traditional LASIK process
This newer type of refractive surgery uses an instrument called a microkeratome to remove the surface layer of the cornea while keeping part of it attached to the eye. After completing this step, the role of the laser comes to correct the inner cornea, and then the doctor restores the superficial corneal layer to fuse with the eye.
PRK Superficial LASIK surgery
Superficial LASIK is one of the oldest laser vision correction procedures, but thanks to the rapid development of LASIK operations, this type of use has become rare. However, this type is used in cases where the cornea of the eye is weak and cannot be treated using modern methods.
